2002 Vintage :
A dry winter followed by spring rains perturbed the blooming and naturally
limited the yield.
The splendid sun of September gave back the grape its maturity, and the harvest
were conducted during the first half of October.
A rigorous blending allowed the production of 42,000 bottles whose selling
started early 2005.
It is selected by the Guide Hachette 2005 and distinguished with a star which
highlights a wine very well made: "This 2002 amazes by its deep ruby color and
its fruits aromas slighty dominated by an intense and quality oak flavour. With
tannins sill very present but well balanced which will soften with time, this
bottle will be ready to drink in two or three years." (Tasting
winter 2005)
Tasting note winter 2006: Enticing ruby color. Intense and deep nose of black
fruit with roasted, chocolate, liquorice overtones and fresh pepper and mint
nuances in a fine oaky structure. The attack is round, the tannins are soft
with an enduring persistance of ripe black fruits. Drink now or wait a couple
of years.
Very nice to drink in 2006, it will continue to mature a few years.

2003 Vintage :
A very hot summer allowed an exceptional maturation unfortunately at the cost
of a significant shrinkage of production to 380 hectoliters, i.e. only 32
hectoliters per hectare. The harvest started as early as September 12th, and
finished at the end of the month.
The production of 50,000 bottles is available for sale since 2006.
Guide Hachette 2006: "Its fruited aromas are dominated by
intense oaky notes. In mouth it is a powerful wine, still austere by full of
promise. Two or three years patience will be needed." (Tasting
winter 2005)
Tasting notes March 2006: Color dark ruby. Powerful nose
of red fruits, cherries with toasted balsamic notes and mint overtone. In
mouth it is a powerful wine with a long fruit and truffle persistence. Nice to
drink now but patience will serve it well.

A somewhat rainy august raised concerns on grape maturity.
Fortunately september caught up with the sunshine shortage, and we made the
challenging and eventually winning bet of a very late harvest: We harvested in
october, from 4th to 16th, and got in wonderfully matured
grapes. Additionnally they were very sound thanks to drastic sorting at the
vineyard allowed by our entirely manual process.
A very selective blending after a year aging in barrels
produced no more than 60000 bottles.
Château du Petit Puch 2004 is selected by the Guide Hachette
2007 with two stars signaling a remarquable wine, with the additional mention
of a good value for price. "A remarquable wine whose brilliant colour garnet red
with ruby lights seduces at once. Then follow intense fragrances of new wood,
toasted, not masking the fruity notes (raspberry, blackcurrant). The velvety
tannins, silky in attack show a very powerful evolution and require two to
three years to reach perfection"
On the market since the beginning of 2007. Very pleasant to drink young thanks
to its fruit and roundness, its structure and power give it a superb ageing
capacity.

This year nature gave us everything. The cold winter allowed the vine to winter properly and sun and warmth started as soon as the third decade of march. Spring and summer were fantastic: Regular sunny weather, scarse rain, a few very warm days and those fresh nights needed to soften the tannins. Cherry on the cake, the Graves de Vayres were spared by those heavy stormy rains of the middle of summer.
All this gave us a vintage of exception that we leisurely harvested from september 26 to october 8.
The chateau du Petit Puch is selected with one star by the 2009 Guide Hachette “Undergrowth and ripe fruits bouquet. The great distinction tannins, well extracted and powerful, evolve with persistance and balance.”
Rated 87/100 by the Gilbert & gaillard 2009 Guide : “Dense colour, ruby lights. Enticing small red fruits nose, delicate note of soft spices. Supple mouth, fine tannins, well balanced. A successful vintage, long, with a true finesse”
Still on the oak, it is certainly nice to drink at the start of this new year 2009 with all its fruits and spices and its powerful structure, but it really deserves to wait. So it is starting its aging process in our air conditioned storehouse. The impatient amateurs can nevertheless secure a few bottles at the chateau.

The season started strongly with temperatures exceeding 30°C as early as end of April. The follow on was more variable with a dominant hot and rather sunny. Like in 2005 the harvest lasted a fortnight but happened a week earlier. It ended October 2d and yielded 34 hectolitres per hectares as the year before.
In order to produce a real great vintage, during our last tasting session we decided to blend only the best batches. We choose the ones aged in new and one year barrels. The quality is top, but the quid pro quo is an almost confidential production : Only 26,000 bottles and 3,000 magnums.
The Gilbert & Gaillard Guide rates it 88/100 (one notch above 2005) : “ Young red dense colour. Pleasant nose associating black fruits, spices and cocoa notes. Beautiful substance in mouth, a dense wine with aerated tannins and a top fruity quality. Long liquorice finish. A driver for the Appellation.”
Selected by the Hachette Guide with one star : “Dense garnet-red 2006, with elegant aromas of black fruits and clove. Structured and spicy the mouth unveils powerful and well matured tannins. Though already nice to drink this wine can wait a few years.”
The chateau du Petit Puch 2006 is a powerful wine with a superb fruity and spicy structure enrobed in silky tannins. A long keep wine. Young wines amateurs can drink it now well aerated, but I suggest to leave it more time.
To keep several years

2007 was difficult to manage with a humid and variable climate favourable to cryptogrammic diseases. Great care and attention allowed us to keep them at bay. In particular several thinning out of the leafs allowed the grapes to juice every ray of sun, and green harvests avoided clusters accumulations favourable to moisture retention. The harvest elapsed on more than three weeks to end mid October.
During the vinification we observed a large variation of quality coming from different parcels. True to our quality tradition we kept only the best batches representing less than half the production. We then privileged a process oriented on fruit and finesse, by shortening a bit the maceration on the skins, and diminishing the proportion of new wood in the barrels. The bottling done during the 2009 spring, as usual after a complete year of aging in barrels, yielded only 30,000 bottles.
It is barely a third of what we are entitled to produce. But results are there ! 2007 is a nice success which reminds me, with a little more complexity, of our well appreciated 2002, sold out today.
The chateau du Petit Puch 2007 enjoys an expressive nose of black fruits and spices. In mouth these aromas are completed with roasted and chocolate notes with a truffle finish. It doesn’t show the 2005 and 2006 powerful substance, but is a classic and delicate wine with a nice and balanced structure. It drinks well now and will keep a few years.
Drink now or keep 3 or 4 years
Selling Price : 12 € Taxes included per bottle.
